Healthy Eating & Getting Active — for Kids in Birmingham

Getting children to eat well and move often can feel like a daily negotiation. The good news is that small, consistent habits matter far more than perfection.

Building a balanced plate

Aim for a mix of carbohydrates, protein, dairy or an alternative, and at least one fruit or vegetable at every meal. Portions for under-fives are smaller than most parents expect — roughly the size of the child's own fist.

  • Offer new foods alongside familiar favourites, never instead of them
  • Let children serve themselves where possible — it builds autonomy
  • Keep water as the default drink between meals
  • Eat together whenever you can; children copy what they see

Snacks that actually work

Chopped fruit, breadsticks with hummus, plain yoghurt with berries and cheese cubes travel well and don't cause the sugar crash that leads to a difficult afternoon.

Getting active in Birmingham

Children aged one to four should be active for at least 180 minutes a day, spread throughout the day. That doesn't mean sport — it means moving.

  1. Cannon Hill Park and Sheldon Country Park for open space and wildlife
  2. Walking part of the school or nursery run instead of driving all the way
  3. Living-room dancing when the weather is against you
